In the recent trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales, played by Shameik Moore sets out on a journey to defend the multiverse from an exciting new evil. In the teaser, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099) pokes fun at No Way Home’s universe-jumping antics, saying: “And don’t even get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd on Earth 199999.” What this means is that Earth-616 is the main Earth in the comics Multiverse while Earth-199999 is the main Earth in the cinematic Multiverse. This line is definitely a nice easter egg, and I’m sure there’s more to come in the movie.
Is the world of Miles Morales tied to the MCU?
Speaking to SFX for its recent issue, co-director Kemp Powers stated that the new film is unrelated to the MCU and that the joke is intended to acknowledge the character’s legacy. “The world of Miles Morales and Spider-Verse, it’s not tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything like that,” Powers explained. “But this is a Lord and Miller film. We like to have a little bit of fun, we like to be a little bit meta and to acknowledge the world in which we are creating these stories. That’s the best way to explain it.”
Powers teased fans by telling viewers to anticipate another joke that will “stun” them. “This isn’t something where we did anything in conjunction with Marvel. Miles’s universe, trust me, there’s plenty to work with. That gag is one of many, and my favourite gag is one that people don’t know about yet. But I think when they see it, they’re going to be pretty stunned. It’s a serious film, but it’s also a film with a lot of fun in it.”
As a result, we can deduce that Miles Morales’ world is unrelated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
